Gods of the Sea

Pyramids, ancestor worship, keeping track of the solar system obsessively, sacrificial offerings, meticulous attention to detail, the minds that humans were given and what we do with them puts Darwin in a chokehold.  The self-awareness is reserved for a few select animals, but the ability to tame nature and it’s fabric is reserved for humans alone.  But we have never been alone.  We are the pawns in a much bigger game.  So it is written, so it has been told, so it is.

The ancient Spanish mariners were a group of people who decided the gods of the sea were kinder than the gods of the land.  They weren’t, but at least they were predictable.  Any gods who were resigned to the sea lost a battle for resources along the way.  This made them more loyal to their worshippers than the rest.  If the Mariners faithfully committed themselves and their very souls as sustenance for these gods, they were faithful.  Death by old age was not an option.  Feed the beasts who provided your clan safe passage in the sea and be assured that your children will be relatively safe to live separately from the landlubbers and have the bargaining power as the pre imminent seafarers for when another move involving the sea came to the forefront.
